Il termine Balneocaballum, citato nel X secolo, indicava il paleoalveo del Senio nel tratto che corrisponde all'odierna Via Albergone. In sostanza, il toponimo ricorda la presenza di un guado del fiume Senio in prossimità del primo agglomerato urbano, per attraversare il quale era necessario bagnare le cavalcature.
