The FIP rules specified: Generic cancellations can be used because of • the specific meaning of a place name, or • the reason a place exists. I saw an exhibit about Food and Drink of Sugar. There is a page about sandwich, a kind of food, for which a stampless letter sent from Sandwich, England is showed. The page uses place name 'SANDWICH' in postmark on a stampless letter to describe the food was named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Actually, the thematic point is right. The food's name did come from 4th Earl of Sandwich, and the Earl's name did come from the town, Sandwich. But the problem is whether the place name in postmark can offer such information or not. The meaning of the place name is sandy harbour, and the reason the place exists is not related to Earl of Sandwich (maybe he had not been to this small town.) As my opinion, the item in that exhibit belongs to incorrect use, because the place name in postmark can not offer thematic information for the food according to FIP rules. Even though both the place and the food share the same name. |

I'm agree with you, though the question is: " Do you have a different way to illustrate that passage? " If the answear is not, maybe the cancel can be tolerated, in all other ways is a wrong use. Hi Jin, Your doubts are correct, as correct is Sergio's answer. However, I would add a second question to that asked by Sergio: 1) do you have a different way to illustrate that thematic paragraph? 2) is that thematic paragraph indispensable for the development of your story? If the answer to the first question is NO, AND the answer to the second question is YES, then in my opinion you can use a SANDWICH cancellation. In any case, it's a bit forced, above all when there is no direct correlation between the locality and the concept you want to illustrate. Therefore, in my opinion, it is a method that should be used very cautiously and on few occasions. Kind regards, Marco |

Hi Jin I would also like to say that this use of place names is becoming very popular in thematic exhibits, since it often allows using very interesting items. However, part from being eligible according to FIP rules, it shall be thematically relevant, as pointed out by Marco. I see often a too large use of such kind of items without any or very small added value from a thematic viewpoint. Paolo |
